A ROAD worker was critically injured today when he was hit by a ute in the Launceston suburb of Mowbray.

The 67-year-old Ravenswood man had been holding a traffic control sign and was thrown about 15m by the impact of the accident, which happened about 1.20pm in Vermont Rd.

It was witnessed by horrified co-workers, who had been resealing the road.

The man was taken by ambulance to the Launceston General Hospital with critical head and internal injuries.

Launceston Police Sergeant Nick Clark said the driver of the ute, a 57-year-old man from Mayfield, was not injured but was taken to the LGH for routine drug and alcohol testing.

The accident is being investigated by police and Workplace Standards.

Sgt Clark said it was a busy time of year for road works, which depended on good weather as well as children returning to school.

"We just ask motorists if they come across road works to pay particular attention to the signage," he said.

"Slow down, take your time and look out for people who are on the road or on the edges of the road."

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to contact police on 6336 3701.
